I didn't say this, but I'm grateful

that my old associate during a slow time for Talon Media, Theo Harding, president and owner of Capitol Hill Delivery Service , still has good things to say about me 5 years down the road.

Check this out from my Linked In page:

I enjoyed my 3 years between 2002- 05 working as a courier while completing The Book of Exen. Some of this time period will also be chronicled in its sequel, The Book of Loss. I put the same hard work honesty and direction in the information technology and creative efforts Talon Media Group undertakes today and in the coming years.

Grateful Rememberance Day

Just got back from the UK a couple of days ago. On the bumpers of cars, on people's lapels and hats,  from Halloween weekend right up to this morning when we Yanks, republican and democratic, say "Happy Veterans Day", everywhere you went,  you could see a scarlet red poppy flower attached.

It's a little bit of lubricant for the social wheels here to say that.

The significance of the scarlet poppy has to do with a poem I had read in maybe 9th grade by a Canadian doctor named John Mc Crae who you might think of as Hawkeye if MASH was set in World War One.  Continental Europe and Great Britain got a lot harder of a deal out of that war than the USA. Our neighbors to the north, Canada, from where Dr. Mc Crae hailed, to this day are subjects of the British Crown. He had this to say about the war he saw:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
         In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
         In Flanders fields.

He had a few points there. The powers that be, the powers that we vote into office, and ask for employment , sustenance, and sufficient social order to pursue the same, managed to miss them. Brought us World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the whole Cold War.

I really hope for guidance. As a world, it frightens me that there are evil people out there doing evil and needing to be stopped. There are good people who stand up to that evil, even if it scares them to do so, and facing that evil down.  Doing the right thing, not the easy thing, as their day job.

Right - that which promotes and affirms life and living.
Good  - that which promotes the right.
Wrong- that which detracts from and hinders life and living.
Evil - that which promotes wrong.

Could go into the whole casus belli of the entire current war, but wanted to mention  that I have known a few people who fought in earlier stages of it. They have done work that I am not suited to by temperament, experience, or age.  The work of fighting is by definition, NOT EASY.  I am liable to stand up to people who personally bring me evil. Sniffing out the masterminds of terrorist attacks that kill thousands at a whack or millions if another guy named Barry close to my age chooses the nuclear option to respond to it, that's way above my pay grade. And probably yours too.

And there's not as damned thing happy about why any war starts.

I'm very grateful if you personally or someone related to you fought to stop evil and lost their life to make your life and mine better and more worthwhile.  I'm even more grateful if you or someone close to you stood up to evil and came back to say so.

I plan on spending the rest of this day acting in accordance with my gratitude, and where I can cut down the ambient level of evil,  standing up and so doing. Even if that means keeping my own worst instincts in check. Maybe if everyone started there, we might, as a world, live to remember the very last war.

Dr Mc Crae hoped the war he saw was the very last one there would be.  It's kind of a shame that he was wrong about that.

All respect and gratitude to those who tried to keep Dr Mc Crae from being any more wrong. Today because the world says so. Every other day because I am able to get up and see to employment and sustenance and shelter and personal safety and security without a boot or gun pointed my way.

ok, little cross pollination here

Peter Frampton

Peter Frampton Just saw a truck with balls and a noose hanging from back ...........
Yes, of course it's a racist thing which, unfortunately, I don't find hard to believe. It's just scary to think about how many other people out there feel the same way.

Don't be scared. Change their minds. Break all the rules..
I get the point about castration for miscegenation. I also know that person is probably very hurt by losing out to a person of different extraction, and very sad for thinking his race is his only saving grace.

The poor bozo and those who think like him are steadily inbreeding and the weight will eventually snap their slat of the evolutionary ladder. That he's even around to drive the vegetables to the market is amazing, considering he can drive and grasp the ladder's sides at the same time.

The ones most concerned with being a given race or another are the ones whose way of thinking and being is dying off. Xenophobia destroys the sufferer. No need for the correct minded to be scared

Maybe I need to change my Sunday morning TV habits

I was watching the Mc Laughlin group and they presented a fairly cogent breakdown of the controversy over letting the tax cuts passed by President Bush expire. President Obama and the Democratic leadership actually propose to roll back the highest two tax brackets to their rates before Mr. Bush came to power. The lower tax brackets will see no increase in their rates.

Mr. Mc Laughlin seemed to worry that this might be the beginning shots of class warfare.

I disagreed with that and took the invite at the end of the program to send comments to comments@mclaughlin.com.  If you saw that particular episode, and those worries rubbed you the wrong way, maybe you should express yourself as well.

class warfare

If Mr.Mc Laughlin were really so averse to class warfare, why week after week are we subjected to Monica Crowley and Pat Buchanan's apologist stances for right wing attacks on the lower class? When right wing policies go counter to the interests of the poor and struggling, no one complains about class warfare, even though the economic and social structure have had one in every  seven citizens under siege for as long as I can remember. Structural global economic change runs decent paying jobs out of the country, no complaint about that form of class warfare. What few jobs that are available, lower paying, offering fewer benefits and shorter hours, with no decrease in the monthly bills poorer citizens are confronted with, nobody complains about that form of class warfare.

But let the richest 5% of our society be asked to pay an additional 3% of  their income into the tax base, and Mr. Mc Laughlin is worried about the specter of class warfare, with Ms. Crowley and Mr Buchanan chiming in. Look this over, if you will - One out of every seven citizens is asked to provide more for their family with way less, if not  nothing at all and accept the bromide that a rising tide lifts all boats. One out of every twenty citizens, those most capable of handling such a burden, is asked to contribute an additional 3 % of their income to better society. Which person in that scenario is being treated with more hostility? Which person is really having their existence attacked more severely?

Just asking.

Nine Eleven Twenty Ten

The concept that people can come to believe in a god or higher power of their understanding was popularized, if not originated, in 12 step self help recovery programs. People of all religious backgrounds are able to move forward from that concept and into healthier patterns of thought and action.

One need only witness pogroms, crusades, inquisitions, and genocides from time immemorial inspired by arrogantly mistaken interpretations of the world's various spiritual texts. Say what you will about the founding fathers of the USA recognizing slaves as 60 percent of a citizen, and denying women the vote altogether, they wrote the US Constitution expressly allowing for freedom of religiou / spiritual discipline and of the press. As a nation, we knew better then than to burn books, be they Korans, Bibles, Torahs, Bhagvad Gitas, Kama Sutras, Books of the Dead, Necronimicons or whatever.

Nine years ago today, yes 20 people arrogantly misinterpreting the Koran took an additional 3000 people along for their suicide. Those 20, and those who gave them their orders, do not represent the views of the overwhelming bulk of Muslims. They certainly don't represent the views of ANY person I've ever met, Muslim or otherwise. To blame the sincere practitioners of a religion whose name means submission to divine will for widespread mass murder is to commit the same logical fallacy as to blame the bulk of Christianity's practitioners for white supremacists engaging in their terrorism, justified by the strictures of Leviticus to not gender one's cattle with a diverse kine. If the KKK takes the Bible's instructions on animal husbandry as the green light to murder persons of color, as they have since at least 1868, and run up a tally of at least 3000 dead, would that be a justification to exhort nationwide burning of Bibles on an arguably significant date, say June 19th?

I didn't think so. So today, if you see a Muslim person walking in your path, tell him or her as - salaam -alaikum, and eid mubarak. That's right, peace be with you, and happy end of Ramadan. I know full well YOU didn't fly planes into a building, wouldn't have supported it, and on the off chance I'm wrong about that, the security environment is such that much criminal mischief is nipped in the bud before people die here. And at least Mr. Obama isn't trying to fan the flames of war any higher than they were burning the day I voted for him. A few more years of mutual tolerance and respect won't kill anyone of any religion, or lack thereof. Such as it is, that's actually the American Way, and nobody with a twisted concept of divine will is going to kill 300 million followers. Al Quaeda may have gotten 3000 nine years back, as the KKK got their thousands, as have wrongheaded people throughout the ages. You're not going to get 300 million to swallow that much wrong, and that's just in the USA. The rest of the world has about had enough of the madness, too.

Burn fewer books, and more fallacious straw men.

Thursday, August 26, 2010

In 1990 I began working as an independent professional photographer doing business as Phoenix Imageworks, Ltd, in Kansas City, MO.

Around the advent of widespread public internet usage, I was inspired to combine countercultural print magazines with the nascent convergence of multimedia. My brainchild, a cross between the cable TV hit Red Shoe Diaries, Spin and Rolling Stone magazines, was named Talon Magazine, for the instrument a phoenix would defend itself with.

Born of an artistic soul and an uncompromising radical state of mind, Talon Media Group today offers full service multimedia and internet production, hardware and software support for sole proprietors, non profit and for profit organizations of all sizes. Please call 301-485-6584 and let us take care of your needs!!
